DARYN KAGAN T-SHIRT MYSTERY SOLVED

A year and a half later, it took one boozy, humid summer Sunday for one particular New York Peon to crack.
The result?
I finally know who sent me the above Daryn Kagan t-shirt.
So to you two delicious fire crackers--a kiss, a validated ticket for the CNN parking decks and my eternal gratitude...

A 14th STREET REQUIEM FOR FOXY LADY

The truth is, I'm devastated.
People often bemoan the gentrification of New York. I've even turned the concept into a Mama D's show, and delivered a LOST NEW YORK speech about it, dressed as Mayor Mike Bloomberg.
But it really hit home the other day, when I took the above photo.
It's truly the end of an era. The demise of a trashy wonderland called FOXY LADY.

Now, I never bought a single lycra, rhinestoned, pleather, rayon, fringed, sequined, sparkly, highly flammable item from this store.
But I respected this place.
I figured with a name like that, it must have been there since the 1970's.
I imagined legions of soon to be knocked up teenagers fingering the cheap underpants for sale.
I pictured the yeast infections from the denim coochie cutters and hoochie squeezing vinyl pants.
I visualized illegally purchased beer-fueled encounters with guys at the video arcade while wearing FOXY LADY attire.

So to see that it's gone out of business makes me dab the tears from my eyes with my Lee Press On Nails.
Because this was not a chain.
It was the only "Hey Trish, what tight, sleazy, cheap outfit are we gonna wear to Barry's party on Saturday?" discount store of its kind.

And you know that there's no way another proprietor is going to move into this space and keep that name.
That name is from a bygone era. There will never be another FOXY LADY clothing store. At least not without irony.

And as I was crying into my gin and tonic about this loss, I looked up other defunct clothing stores around the nation.
Shock and horror!
No more Jay Jacob! No more Chess King! No more Merry Go Round!

Don't believe me? Take a look. I'll bet the place you bought your first pair of parachute pants is on this list:

HELP SAVE MR. CLUCKY!

This is an abomination!
One of Miami Beach's most high profile residents is getting the boot:
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – A celebrity rooster and Miami Beach tourist favorite named Mr. Clucky could soon be evicted from the condo he shares with his owner.
The Miami Herald reports that a dramatic city hall plea from Mark Buckley wasn't enough to stop officials from giving city code officers authority to remove Mr. Clucky and his hen girlfriend, Wallflower.
Buckley was also ordered to pay a $50 fine for the rooster, known for perching on the handlebars of his bicycle.
Miami Beach code prohibits keeping poultry and other livestock in residential areas.
But there might still be hope for Mr. Cluckey: Buckley can ask city commissioners for an exception or appeal to the courts.
Mr. Clucky has become a favorite subject of tourist photos and was even grand marshal of a parade.

My theory is that this is what happens when Florida is overrun by bored, fun-crushing members of the Homeowners Association. Bunch of sour pusses.
My Mom and I have long been suspicious of these elected killjoys, and have more than once defied their "No Horseplay" warnings at the pool.

These dull Association bastards are not real Floridians. Florida is the Potluck State--land of pirates, booze smugglers, leathery divorcees in leopard print bikinis, cocaine cowboys, free-wheelin' grannies and night club lotharios. It's populated by wacky Carl Haaisen characters.

As such, Mr. Clucky is a Floridian original, and deserves respect. According to his website, Mr. Clucky believes in "peace, protecting the earth and being kind to animals."

He's a goodwill ambassador. He's Cock of the Miami Beach Walk.

Save Mr. Clucky!

THE TOILET BULLY STRIKES AGAIN!

EXTRA EXTRA! It's a breaking news Peon Confidential EXCLUSIVE!

A spy sent me the above photograph and this horrific eyewitness account:
"A sewage pipe has burst at TWC streaming raw sewage onto 58th street...it is currently moving downstream towards 8th Avenue. A little too much fiber in the LKL diet?
It's really gross...it's a river of shit...as I walked back into the building, it reminded me of those videos we've all seen of 3rd world countries and their polluted rivers."

Now, I don't know if you remember, but a few months back Peon Confidential leaked an internal memo about bathroom vandalism at the Time Warner Center. We even tried to guess this crazed vandal's identity.

So I'm thinkin' that whoever it is has taken it up a notch. This hooligan is unstoppable; careening to the next level of depraved toilet rebellion.

Something MUST be done about this situation. How many lives have to be ruined by overstuffed toilets and rivers of sewage before the culprit is apprehended?

It's time to take action.

TOILET DREAMS

So-
Last night I was battling some sort of stomach flu till 3am.
Highly unpleasant, clutching that bowl like Rush Limbaugh to a hamburger, vomiting non-stop.
(It's kind of fascinating to play CSI detective with your own barf though, trying to recall when you ate corn.)
But if I had a toilet like the one above, I doubt I'd be complaining as much. I'd be blinded by the crystals.
Cleaning it would be a delight. I'd whistle while I scrubbed it. I'd take laxatives just so I could spend more time on it.
My life would be filled with sunshine if that were my toilet.

Well.

Now that we've cleared that up, happy Friday!

BLIND ITEM UPDATE

So-
I was talking to a CNN alum yesterday about the third comment on Blind Item# 14. This Peon exclaimed that the comment is a rather tasty bit of gossip because:
A) It isn't commonly known
and
B) One person in this equation is married. To someone else.
Now-I don't know if the gossip or the marital status claim is true.
Do you?
If anyone can clear this up for me, I'd be much obliged. Google has let me down. I hope you Peons can come to the rescue.

CALLING JOHN WATERS

One of you thoughtful Peons sent me a link to a story with the following headline:
Swedish Lesbians Suck Sperm Banks Dry

Intrigued, I read the story and found this headline directly underneath:
US Woman Attacks Missus With Sperm-Filled Syringe

What I wouldn't give for a hotline to John Waters' house in Baltimore. (And yes, the hotline phone would be a 1950's pink princess model.) Surely the mustachioed director responsible for such classics as "Pink Flamingos" "Female Trouble" and "Serial Mom" could combine these two headlines to create a cinematic masterpiece.

So John, if you're a chronic self-Googler like me and happen to read this, here are five possible film titles for this spooge-filled romp:

1. Attack of The Sperm Crazed Lesbians

2. The Stockholm Ejaculate Syndicate

3. Cum Pirates from Outer Space

4. Semen Smorgasbord

5. Friedborg and Torborg: The Quest for Cum

Any others?

Okay.
I should have expected this.
One of you crazy comedians sent me this photo of your "Real New York Apartment".
Love what you've done with the place. Great use of space. But I just remembered--I can't make that dinner party you invited me too. Yeah. Sorry. I'll be out of town that day. Oh, you haven't announced the date yet? Huh.

REAL NEW YORK APARTMENTS

It's a brand new concept here at Peon Confidential, where Peon lives are revered.
So-
For years, people have scoffed at the New York apartments depicted on TV shows and in movies. The natives point out that only tycoons or blackmailers of tycoons live in the apartments on "Friends" or "Will and Grace" or any other syndicated dreamworlds. Those apartments are too spacious, too clean, too perfect.
And they're right on the money.
Which is why I've decided to show you how the real folks live.
I'll start with my apartment, and I hope you'll follow suit.
No need to tell me your street address, or show yourself in the photo.
Just send me a photo of your real New York apartment at vjdutton@gmail.com
Let's eradicate real estate falsehoods together, shall we?

(Click to enlarge. If only I could do the same in real life.)

BLIND ITEM #14

Which early rising news duo despise each other so much that they can scarcely stand to be in the same shot? This set ain't big enough for them. For a while, the hatred was so palpable that they were only in a 2 shot at the top of the show. But there's a new EP in town. And this sharp shooter is demanding more 2 shots. So the question is, can Butch Cassidy and the Sundunce Kid hide their irritation behind fake smiles? Will there be a shootout on the set? Stay tuned.

FAREWELL, BEA ARTHUR

Over the weekend, my favorite Golden Girl Bea Arthur passed away. She was 86. Bea spent the early part of her career on Broadway, and did not appear on television until she was 50, when she was cast on "Archie Bunker" as Edith's liberal relative, Maude. This led to a spin off show called "Maude". But to me, her finest moments were on the "Golden Girls".

As I mentioned in the previous post, I just visited my parents in Florida, and what my mother told me is true: my dad is hooked on The Golden Girls reruns. He tunes in every morning.

The following is my very favorite Golden Girls scene. Anytime you can blend hilarity with a message about safe sex is aces with me. This scene is from a Valentine's Day episode. Blanche, Rose and Dorothy are at the pharmacy before leaving for a cruise:

Blanche: In this day in age it might be a good idea to take along some... protection.
Rose: What kind of protection?
Dorothy: Two armed Pinkerton guards. No, Blanche is talking about... [indicates a nearby counter]
Rose: A Nestle's Crunch?
Dorothy: One over.
Rose: An enema bag?
Dorothy: To the right.
Rose: Dentu-Grip?!
Dorothy: CONDOMS, ROSE! CONDOMS, CONDOMS, CONDOMS!
Cashier: Calm down, lady! You just get out of prison?

Blanche: There's no reason to be embarrassed! Now these are discreet professionals. This is a private matter. Whatever we buy is nobody's business but our own! [picks up a package of condoms off the counter and hands it to the cashier] I'd like a package of these, please.
Dorothy: [grabs another package of condoms and hands it to the cashier] And I'll take these.
Rose: [looks around nervously, then tentatively grabs a random package of condoms off the counter and hands it to the cashier] ...and I'll take these.
Blanche: Now, that wasn't so bad, was it?
Cashier: [speaking into his microphone] JOE, I NEED A PRICE CHECK ON SOME CONDOMS! THESE THREE LADIES HERE WANT A COUPLE OF BOXES OF THE KING GEORGE PROPHYLACTICS, THE LAMBSKINS AND THE ULTRA-SENSITIVE. TWO OF THEM HAVE THE LAMBSKINS, AND THE BLONDE HAS THE ULTRA-SENSITIVE IN BLACK.

BONUS: CONDOMS CONDOMS CONDOMS!

THE LAND OF NO TECHNOLOGY

So-
The reason there were no posts this week is that I was visiting my parents in Florida. The only item in their home that vaguely resembles a computer is a Word Processor. They even got rid of their 1980's Texas Instruments computer. And their Betamax. It's a miracle that they don't have a rotary phone attached to the kitchen wall.
And having spent these past few days in a pre-1995 universe, I can honestly say I don't know how we did it. I do not look upon those days with great nostalgia. Nay, I marvel at how we withstood such hardship. It's akin to the covered wagon era, when there were no showers and smelly pioneers rolled around in grass to rub off the stench of 10 day old B.O.

Let's look at the pros and cons of our Internet-driven society:

PROS:

1. The ability to settle arcane movie trivia arguments with ease.

2. Sites like Manhunt take the pressure off of clubbers to find someone to go home with at 3am. Horny denizens can just enjoy their cocktails, then go home alone and choose some equally horny person online. No muss, no fuss.

3. Realizing that there are people in the world like this: SARA AND HER VAGINA CAPE.

4. Online banking alleviates the need to wait in line behind assholes at the bank.

5. Submitting articles to various publications is so much easier. Plus, getting rejected by The New Yorker doesn't have such a sting when it is merely an electronic rejection. No palpable "Sorry, but this piece just isn't for us" letter to rip up.

CONS:

1. Settling arcane movie trivia arguments the old fashioned way could go on for hours, and would bring up other movies, thoughts and ideas. Then, you'd call up some super smart friend in another state and get them in on it too. This was fun, cheap entertainment. But then again, entertainment options were limited back then.

2. Manhunt and similar sites have changed the atmosphere at certain clubs. They just don't buzz with as much sexual energy anymore. The 3am desperation has decreased.

3. Realizing that there are people in the world like this: SARA AND HER VAGINA CAPE.

4. Online banking means none of those butterscotch candies in glass bowls at the bank. They weren't very good, but it was nice to get something for free.

5. Some writers have a perverse need to keep their rejection slips. There are plenty of stories of broke writers wallpapering their cheap, nasty, Campbell's soup scented apartments with rejection slips. Online submissions and rejections eliminate this option. But frankly, I think those writers need a better sense of interior design.

BLOOD, SWEAT AND TEARS

If you're eating something at your computer right now, read this later:

HONG KONG (AFP) – An Indonesian maid has appeared in a Hong Kong court accused of adding menstrual blood to her employer's food in an effort to improve their stormy relationship, a report said Thursday.
Indra Ningsih, aged 26, mixed the blood in a pot of vegetables in the belief that the recipe would help smooth over her difficult work environment, The Standard newspaper reported.
In some southeast Asian cultures, menstrual blood is thought to have special powers, the paper added.
The maid has been charged with one count of "administering poison or other destructive or noxious substances with intent to injure," and has not yet entered a plea.

Wow.
I can sort of understand the notion that menstrual blood has magical powers, as men are often completely and utterly grossed out by the concept. Hell, so are women sometimes. It creates quite a strong reaction, which I suppose is magical.
But it would seem to me that there are better ways of improving relations with your boss.

-You could present your boss with one of those Mrs. Fields Cookie Cakes or a Hickory Farms basket of sausage and cheese.
-You could send a singing telegram or a balloon bouquet.
-You could offer to stay late on a Friday.

But flavoring the soup with menstrual blood is probably not your best option.

NON-ALCOHOLIC WAKE?

I am slightly confused by the following story. I thought people were supposed to drink at wakes?
Was this a dry county in Arkansas? Why bother calling it a wake at all if you can't drink? At that point it's a memorial service.
I can't blame this woman for refusing to leave her beer can behind. She heard it was a wake and expected booze. And she traveled out of state to get there.
I hate false advertising...

MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Sheriff's deputies said a Texas woman started a brawl at a wake in Arkansas when she arrived with a beer can in her hand. The woman, 52, faces a third-degree domestic battery charges, as does another woman, 46, over the March 29 fight. Deputies said the first woman arrived at the Christies Chapel Church with a beer can in hand and that she refused to leave.

NAKED POLE VAULTER: THE ECONOMIC CRISIS STRIKES AGAIN

Just when you think all angles of the economic crisis have been covered, what with mistresses bitching about married men taking them to cheap restaurants, married women taking 2nd jobs at strip joints, and ex-businessmen wandering about in panda suits (see below) along comes another sorry bastard tugging at your heartstrings with his tale of economic woe...

PARIS (Reuters) – A French pole vaulting champion has run naked with his pole through the streets of Paris and posted the video on the Internet, hoping to draw attention to his quest for a new sponsorship deal.
Romain Mesnil, who won a silver medal at the 2007 Athletics World Championships in Osaka, used to be sponsored by U.S. sports brand Nike but says his contract expired last year and was not renewed.
Many athletes have reported difficulties obtaining corporate sponsorship as companies cut costs because of the global economic downturn.

And naturally, I found the video for you:

SAD PANDA AND THE DUANE READE BAG

So-
Apparently, the Sad Panda featured above has been spotted all over Manhattan. He's been known to shuffle about listlessly on Wall Street, in the West Village, and on the subway.
I'm not quite sure why he's so sad. He seems to be getting a bit dirty, so I doubt he's bathing much. Another sign of depression.
But I do know that Sad Panda's propensity for carrying a Duane Reade shopping bag provides evidence for my Duane Reade shopping bag observation.

EXTENDED WEAR UNDERPANTS

Hello Peons!
I have some truly startling news to deliver today...
HOUSTON (Reuters) – Teen-age boys, are you tired of embarrassing questions about when you last changed underwear? Japan's space scientists may have just the answer -- a line of odour-free underwear and casual clothing.
Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese astronaut to live on the International Space Station, is testing the clothes, called J-ware and created by textile experts at Japan Women's University in Tokyo.
"He can wear his trunks (underwear) more than a week," said Koji Yanagawa, an official with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency.

This is terrifying.
Is this "extended wear underpants" discovery the new Tang?
You know, an appalling product that was specifically designed for astronauts but for some inexplicable reason found it's way into homes across the nation?

I don't even know where to begin on this one.

BRAZILIAN WAX BAN

Beavers in New Jersey could get just a little bit hairier:

TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey is drawing the line when it comes to bikini waxing.
The state Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling is moving toward a ban on genital waxing altogether after two women reported being injured in their quest for a smooth bikini line.
Both women were hospitalized for infections following so-called "Brazilian" bikini waxes; one of the women has filed a lawsuit, according to Jeff Lamm, a spokesman for New Jersey's Division of Consumer Affairs, which oversees the cosmetology board.
Technically, genital waxing has never been allowed — only the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms are permitted — but because bare-it-all "Brazilians" weren't specifically banned, state regulators haven't enforced the law.

"The genital area is not part of the abdomen or legs as some might assume," Lamm said.

Okay. Let's say this ban passes...

What would a police raid on an illegal Brazilian bikini waxing salon look like?
Can you imagine the pubic pandemonium? The shrieking, the spilled wax, the customers with half-bare poon bolting out the door...
Will there be a special police squad for this type of law enforcement?

New Jersey, you've got quite a few issues to sort out before enacting this ban.

TOP 10 INTERVIEW MISTAKES EXEMPLIFIED

So-
I have failed many, many interviews in my lifetime. I literally cannot count the interviews I have botched, mostly because I'm not good at math. (See also: the math quiz for Morgan Stanley that I abandoned after the third question.) I suspect that my behavior has been so jaw-droppingly, head-slappingly embarrassing that I have become an anecdote at recruiter seminars.

As such, when I came across this article about interview mistakes, I took note. Perhaps I could learn something.
Upon reading them, I realized I've made every single mistake on the list. As a Peon Confidential community service in this brutal economic climate, I'm sharing those mistakes with you:

1. Not knowing your aim.
The best example of this would be when I interviewed for a position in Feeds at CNN, a position which consisted of pushing play and record in a dark crevice of the newsroom, and I told them I was suited for this because I spoke French.

2. Being too needy.
Once during an interview, there was a tray of cookies and muffins on the conference table for an upcoming meeting that was scheduled to take place later in the day. I kept glancing at this delicious tray of baked goods with such longing that I practically drooled on myself. My distraction was so great that the interviewer finally snapped, "Those are for managers only."

3. Lousy nonverbal communication.
A prime example: The time the interviewer left the room and returned (she was so quiet--must have been wearing those Easy Spirit pumps) to find me picking my nose. She actually asked, "Are you finished?"

4. Compromising your position.
See above.

5. Falling into the answers-only rut.
I had no idea you were supposed to ask questions. I guess this is why interviewers look at me funny when they finally ask if I have any questions, and I reply, "Nope. Wow! You sure have been thorough. Thanks!"

6. Rambling.
Talking about the Clermont Lounge strip club in Atlanta (including Blondie's patented tit punch maneuver) was in hindsight, not such a great idea.

7. Being overly familiar.
The time I told the interviewer that I had horrible breath and needed a mint was perhaps a tad familiar.

8. Making incorrect assumptions.
Thinking the interviewer would offer me a mint. She did not.

9. Getting emotional.
Perhaps during those failed interviews in which I have both rambled
and became overly familiar in a foreign accent put me over the edge into emotional territory. Especially when I was applying to The State Department for a job as a foreign officer.

10. Not asking specific questions.
Now, here's where I differ. I ask specific questions, just not about the job. I'll ask about the charming photo on the interviewer's desk of his family on a Mexican cruise. I'll ask if they enjoyed Mexico. I'll ask what they ate. I'll ask if they tipped the Mariachi band. But I won't ask about company objectives.

BLIND ITEM #13

INNERMOST THOUGHTS

I'm going to speculate that at least one of the pious women on the above album cover is thinking:

1. "I'm not wearing any panties."

2. "Hurry up and take this picture. I've got a jar of peanut butter and a German Shepherd waiting for me at home."

3. "I'm the pretty one."

4. "Who farted?"

5. "Why the hell did you two bitches have to pull my head out of the oven last Wednesday?"

MEXICAN CHEF DEPORTED, ENGLISH PUNTERS DENIED DECENT TACOS

We're treading into Lou Dobbs territory here on Peon Confidential today...
LONDON (Reuters) – A Mexican national who told airport immigration he was visiting Britain to see a friend was swiftly deported after a search unearthed a good-luck card in his luggage wishing him well for his "new life in the UK."
UK Border Agency officers at Manchester Airport routinely stopped the 40-year-old chef after he arrived on a flight from Los Angeles last Friday.
The man told them he was on a short trip to see a friend who was opening a restaurant in the area.
"However, a search of the passenger's baggage revealed a huge collection of Mexican food recipes and a good-luck card from his church wishing him well for his 'new life in the UK,'" the agency said in a statement.
The man later admitted he had intended to work at the restaurant illegally and had planned to bring his family over from America if he liked it.
He was deported the next day.

Now, I'm not defending illegal immigration. My mom is an immigrant, but she had all the proper paperwork. Plus, she had a lovely collection of sparkly disco pants and mini skirts. That's called immigrating with panache and respect.

But I think in this situation, the immigration officials might have made an exception.
Here's why:
I lived in London for two and a half years.
There was not one decent Mexican restaurant in my neighborhood, or any neighborhood that I stumbled into.
No El Ranchero. No Pancho Villa's. Nada!
And I love Mexican food, so I had to resort to making my own at home. I would buy some crappy, overpriced Old El Paso taco kits from the "specialty" store. I'd fry up beef that may or may not have been infected with Mad Cow disease. (I'm not showing any signs of it yet--fingers crossed.) English friends would come over, sniff my inauthentic feast and say,
"Oh, taah-cohs".
(With the "a" pronounced as in "apple".)
Taah-cohs.
You see how severe this problem is?
England needs some delicious Mexican restaurants. Maybe things have changed since I lived there, but I'm doubtful.
They should have let this Mexican chef into the country. Or at least confiscated his recipes. It might have opened up a whole new culinary world...

CNN PEON EMERGENCY: DETECTIVE WORK REQUIRED

Are you sitting down?
Because a Peon Confidential spy just sent me the above photograph, thus alerting me to a tragic turn of toilet events.
As the go-to recipient of all your toilet concerns, I was shocked to see that danger is afoot at the Time Warner Center restrooms.

Some rapscallion committed a misdeed so heinous, so destructive, that management had to slap up CAUTION tape over the crime scene.

So listen up all you Colonel Mustards, Miss Scarlets and Professor Plums, the question is...what kind of evil is lurking behind that CNN stall door? And who is responsible?

Possible Suspects and Crimes:

1. Lou Dobbs: Flushing an illegal immigrant down the toilet

2. Anderson Cooper: Using that stall as a closet

3. Nancy Grace: Holding her producer Elizabeth hostage in that stall

4. VJDutton: Haunting that stall like "Moaning Myrtle" from Harry Potter, mourning my dead CNN career

5. Larry King: Hiding in that stall, fearing world domination by Ryan Seacrest

Do you sleuths have any other theories?

TIME WARNER TOILET PROPAGANDA

Today I am again humbled by the thoughtfulness of our Peon Confidential readers, for I found this photograph of a Time Warner toilet poster waiting for me in my inbox.

To quote CNN's resident justice avenger Nancy Grace, "Thank yeeeeew, friend."

It is more proof that when people see anything fart or toilet related, my face immediately comes to mind.
This is an honor right up there with being the spokesperson for Activia.
Which prompts the question--
Jamie Lee Curtis is married to a lord. She's a successful children's book author. I can't imagine she needs the money.
Why does she shill for that shit? It's a step below Lifetime movies.
And you can't tell me that she's hell bent on spreading the gospel of bowel churning yogurt.

Anyway, what I noticed first about this toilet poster is that it looks remarkably like Communist Propaganda. Compare it to the actual propaganda posters I've added. Note the strong, bold lines, the wrench held like a sickle. The plunger held aloft in worker's unity. The rallying call to arms...

Pasty CNN employees beware. Plumbers of the World Unite! No hand towels in the toilet!

MR. PEANUT IS GONNA GIT YA!

Okay.
Call me an insensitive bitch. Go ahead, I won't correct you. But check this out:

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The return of peanuts to the snack menu at Northwest Airlines this month has prompted a spasm of protests from travelers with allergies.
The change comes four months after Northwest merged with Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines and in the midst of a national salmonella outbreak involving Peanut Corporation of America. In Minneapolis, where Northwest is based, news of the change has resulted in a flood of responses on the Web site of the Star Tribune, a local newspaper.
"This is a very disappointing development," wrote one man who responded to the story. "My wife's allergy is so severe that if someone is sitting next to her and eating peanuts, the odor is enough to trigger an allergic reaction."
"Northwest is really out of touch with its customers and the reality of allergies to peanuts," wrote another reader. "What's wrong with pretzels?"
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than 3 million Americans are allergic to peanuts or tree nuts.
Delta says it will make accommodations for those with peanut allergies, if a request is made.
"We'll create a buffer zone of three rows in front of and three rows behind your seat," the airline's Web site says.

My question is this:
When the fuck did everyone start having such a problem with peanuts? When did these insane allergies descend upon us?

When I was a kid, no one had peanut allergies. No one. Kids across the lunch room opened up their Scooby Doo and Garfield lunch boxes and happily munched on peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (on white bread, with the grape jelly seeping though like a wound.) Now just the threat of being near a peanut prompts an airline quarantine.

When I was a kid, no one had to make sure they didn't get peanut M&Ms on Halloween. No, our concern was the threat of some creep putting razor blades in apples or handing out Ex-Lax instead of chocolate. Our parents had heard about this on the nightly news. Of course, this never actually happened to anyone we knew.

And I'm starting to wonder if peanut allergies are the new nightly news boogeyman.

POVERTY: HITTING BELOW THE BELT

Yet another hard-hitting Peon Confidential analysis of the economic crisis for you today...

NEW YORK (Reuters) – It's crippling for businesses but the credit crisis is giving Cupid a boost as more people hunt online for mates to weather the economic storm.
Unlike other companies where revenues are dropping and layoffs are climbing, online dating seems to be resistant to the recession.
"In a tough economy, you want someone to appreciate you for who you are and not because of your jobs or material possessions," said eHarmony chief executive Greg Waldorf.

Translation: When people are broke, they want someone to fuck who they don't have to spend money on.

AN ELEGY FOR A BACHELOR PAD

Yet another casualty of the shitty economy:
No more sexy bachelor pads like this. No more swanky rotating beds, fully stocked bars, sexy chrome fixtures and love-makin' tunes blaring from the hi-fi.
These days, it's a cheap futon, a DIY entertainment center from Target (with one nail rammed too far in, causing the particle board to burst) sports posters on the walls and last week's Chinese takeout and two beers in the fridge.

It's a wonder anyone gets laid at all.

HOT DIGGITY DOG!

So-
This is thoroughly vile:

CASABLANCA (AFP) – Taking things a little too literally, a Moroccan man was jailed for six years for selling customers dog meat instead of beef, a judicial source said Friday.
The man, who admitted mixing the dog meat with chemicals to conceal the different smell and colour, was also made to pay a fine of 10,000 dirhams (900 euros, 1,185 dollars).

But it got me to thinking about the couple of instances where I have been absurdly drunk, and thought it was a good time to purchase a hot dog from a street vendor. Now, I know that "Law and Order" would have viewers believe that lawyers eat that shit every day--but this is a heinous lie. The only time locals ever eat a street vendor hot dog is when they are drunk. And not just buzzed, I mean bumping into the walls, singing into a beer bottle, arguing with/fucking the bartender plastered.
The only saving grace is that the next morning, you usually have little recollection of the whole disgusting culinary experience.

Except for the last time I did this. It was two thirty in the morning, and I was out with a pal. She could barely eat one bite, while I wolfed mine down. Afterwards, she told me the vendor had dirt caked under his fingernails. While I'd say she could have given me a heads up before I ate the dog, in the condition I was in, I doubt it would have mattered.

A few days later, I was late for work, and just pulled out the same dress I'd worn out a few nights before. I was in a rush, and did not notice until I was well on my way to 6th avenue that there was hot dog...slime all over the tit section of this dress. So I didn't just scarf that filthy crap down--I did it with a FLOURISH!

I haven't eaten another one since.

TOP 10 MAGNUM P.I. MINUTIAE

So-
Today is Tom Selleck's birthday! All the best to you Tom, thanks for making this world a better, more mustachioied place. It's also a perfect day to celebrate one of the greatest shows of all time, Magnum P.I. Those of you who know me know that Magnum P.I. is on constant rotation at my place. But I'm not going to focus on the important elements of the show (such as the legendary mustache.) No, I'd like to point out the little details that make this show a classic:

1. The rubber chicken

2. TC's rainbow suspenders, occasionally worn without a shirt

3. Rick's contrast collared shirts, occasionally unbuttoned to display gold chains

4. The brown and orange Island Hoppers color scheme

5. Magnum's big brass bed

6. Magnum's crazy tight OP shorts, which never cease to catch me off guard when I look up from ironing or writing or brushing my teeth.

7. The fact that they reused the estate location (and countless actors) from Hawaii Five-0

8. The blue eyeshadow, feathered hair and nude pantyhose sported by the sexy ladies--even on Waikiki Beach

9. Higgins' comb over

10. Agatha's huge glasses, behind which she gave Higgins' comb over many lustful glances

FASHION NEWSFLASH

I think the time is right to resurrect the 1980's khaki jumpsuit, as modeled by my mom in the above photo. Look how happy that jumpsuit is making her.
Who's with me on this?

A SLIP OF THE DUNG

As always, I am ignoring the big picture today and focusing on shit:

BANGKOK, Thailand – A count of elephant dung revealed a surprisingly large endangered elephant population — more than 600 — in Malaysia's biggest national park, researchers said Thursday.
The number of endangered Asian elephants had always been a mystery as researchers tried to visually count every one of the frequently shifting crowd in the dense jungle.
But the new method of counting dung piles came up with an estimate of 631 animals living in Taman Negara National Park, the New York-based Wildlife Conservation Society and Malaysia Department of Wildlife and National Parks said.

Now, this is good news, if it's true. I love elephants and am glad to know that they are livin' large in Malaysia.
But, I am concerned about this new dung counting method of population assessment:

How do they know that each pile of dung is from a different elephant? What if one elephant just had an upset stomach (say he drank too many margaritas) and they counted his dung piles as the work of three elephants?
I mean, not to get too graphic, but...I suspect there have been times where a VJDutton dung count would be way off, if this method was employed. Dung tabulators would assume there were at least 5 VJDuttons roaming around Manhattan.

Huh.

Isn't freedom of the press great? I mean, aren't you glad you live in a country where this blog isn't censored? Wouldn't it be a travesty if you hadn't read this blog today?

MARRIAGE=MEAT

Color me bewildered:

GREENFIELD, Calif. – Police have arrested a Greenfield man for allegedly arranging to sell his 14-year-old daughter into marriage in exchange for $16,000, 100 cases of beer and several cases of meat.

Several cases of meat. Was it rump roast, chuck roast, brisket, or prime rib? And why stop there when bartering away your daughter's life? If you're going to ask for several cases of meat, why not ask for:

1. A crate of Fruit of the Loom sweat socks

2. 12 boxes of ShamWows

3. A year's supply of Ore-Ida TaterTots

4. A truckload of Tucks hemorrhoid pads

5. Several Drakkar Noir gift sets from J.C. Penney

10 CREATIVE WAYS OF TRANSPORTING BOOZE

We have an enterprising boozer with a commitment to the cause that we're celebrating here on Peon Confidential today:

BILLINGS, Mont. – A school bus driver made an unscheduled stop at a liquor store, then allegedly asked a student to help hide her purchases when police stopped her, the district superintendent said. It does not appear the driver had been drinking, Billings Public Schools Superintendent Jack Copps said. No charges had been filed but the driver quit her job this week.

This woman was not about to go without her booze, and used any means necessary to ensure she got it.
I appreciate her tenacity and resourcefulness. She makes other boozers seem lazy in comparison.

But it got me to thinking of other creative ways to transport booze in a pinch:

1. By mule/camel/shetland pony

2. Tucked inside Phillip Seymore Hoffman's ass

3. On a Zamboni

4. Strapped to Celine Dion

5. Pulled by a tribe of pygmies

6. In a rickshaw driven by Regis Philbin

7. In a Miata driven by Richard Simmons

8. On Tootie's roller skates

9. In a Frito-Lay van hijacked by Chad Lowe

10. On The Great Space Coaster

Any others?

BLOW UP SEX DOLL BANDIT

Just woke up in my footie pjs, ate some leftover Chicken parm, popped a few aspirin to stave off a hangover and found this delightful story:

SYDNEY (Reuters) – An Australian man broke into three adult shops, had sex with blow up dolls named "Jungle Jane" and then dumped his plastic conquests in a nearby alley, local media reported Wednesday.
"It's totally bizarre. It's a real concern that someone like that is out on the street," said one of the owners of the adult sex shops.

Now, what makes "Jungle Jane" so special? You'd think he'd want a little variety. If he's going to all that effort, breaking the law just to stick his weenie in an inanimate object, you'd think he'd give some other sex dolls a test drive. Surely they are worthy of his attentions too. What about:

1. Catheter Cathy

2. Truck Stop Trish

3. Pittsburgh Polly

4. Port-a-Potty Pam

5. Food Court Fran

The list of missed opportunities must be keeping this bandit awake at night...

NEW DIMENSION OF DISGUST

The other night, a friend of mine told me a story.
It seems an acquaintance of hers was on vacation, and did not have a dressy pair of trousers for a specific event.
She asked the woman she was staying with if she could borrow a pair of hers.
This woman replied; "Sure, you can borrow these, as long as you don't mind the clitty litter."
CLITTY LITTER.
Clitty mother fucking Litter.

There are so many, many problems with this story:

1. No woman over the age of 13 should borrow another woman's trousers. If I didn't have suitable attire for an event while I was far from home, my plan would be thus:

A. Put on some fabulous lipstick.
B. Wear whatever sequined unitard, billowing Hammer pants, scratch n' sniff ski boots, fringed and beaded bustier, Bedazzled chaps or plaid poncho I had in my suitcase. (And yes, some of those items have been found in my suitcase before.)
C. Hope I could slide by on my wit and charm.

Shit, I didn't even like trading clothes when I was 13. Made no sense to me. I was never interested in joining the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.

2. If you are offering trousers {shudder} to another woman...GIVE HER A CLEAN PAIR!

3. I cannot stress how grossed out I am by this "clitty litter" term. It is so vile that it haunts my dreams and every waking hour. I will not be able to eat cottage cheese for months. I will not look at cats or trousers or litter boxes in the same way again. I will be dropping off all of my trousers at the dry cleaners, even ones I haven't worn yet. If this condition persists, you will probably find me hallucinating in an alley way somewhere, wild-eyed, frightened, chanting "clitty litter, clitty litter, clitty litter" over and over again, rubbing myself with raw meat.*

*Reference to a brilliant 1993 Lifetime movie starring Valerie Bertinelli called "Murder of Innocence". The raw meat scene is acting at it's finest.

NUNS CAN BE FUN!

I just read this gem from the Associated Press:

NEW YORK – Nuns who own a New York City apartment house have filed a lawsuit saying a tenant couple is stinking up the building with "horrible" food smells "similar to that of vomit or rotten meat." The lawsuit by the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart Inc. says Gloria and Michael Lim are causing "foul and harmful odors" to come from their 16th floor apartment by cooking and smoking large quantities of fish.

The image of hardcore New York nuns suing an Asian couple is really funny to me. I also like that the "Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart" is incorporated. Very business savvy.
But it got me to thinking about all the ways in which nuns can be funny. Take them out of their natural habitat (yes there's a "habit" pun in there somewhere, but I'm too lazy to look for it) and nuns are quite amusing. Ask Whoopie Goldberg. She'll back me up on this one. I'm sure you' ve all thought about this before, but have you ever made a top 10 list about it?

TOP 10 SITUATIONS IN WHICH NUNS ARE HILARIOUS

1. Working the drive-thru window at Arby's

2. Riding with the Hells Angels

3. Pumping gas...into a 70's van with an airbrushed bikini babe on the side

4. At the gynecologist's office, feet in stirrups

5. Playing the accordion/bagpipes/tuba

6. Kickboxing...at the gym while Beyonce's "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" blares in the background

7. Doing the Riverdance

8. At a tailgate party...manning the barbeque, face painted with their team colors

9. At a rodeo

10. In a mosh pit

LEAKED CNN MEMO

I love our Peon Confidential spies. You people do great work. You put the CIA and the MI6 to shame.

Yesterday, one of our spies sent me the Time Warner Year End Message from Jeff Bewkes. It was full of the usual "great job folks" type platitudes, and the expected "but in this tough economy, we face certain challenges."

Now, this is all true.
But what pissed off our spy was this line:

"Just as important to our future is making sure that we correctly manage our structure and costs. It's been hard, but we've made good progress on our aggressive agenda for the year."

Why is this so annoying? Well, our spy provided this nugget:

"The terms of Bewkes’ contract with Time Warner include a base salary of $2 million upon his election as chairman and an annual discretionary cash bonus with a target amount of $8.5 million. An additional long-term incentive package puts Bewkes’ total compensation at as much as $19 million."

Naturally, this prompted further analysis:

"WTF? You want to manage costs? How about not having a potential $19 million dollar pay package?"

Indeed.

THE WEIRD CONSEQUENCES OF NOT DRIVING

Those of you know me are well aware that I don't drive. Never had a driver's license. The whole concept just freaks me out; idiotic me behind the wheel, in control of a car. It actually wakes me up when I have nightmares about driving.
Now, since I live in the United States and not a quaint French village, not having a car has put me in some strange situations.
Such as:

-Getting stranded in downtown Atlanta while looking at lofts, and wandering into a Christian charity office to call a cab. I was allowed to use the phone only after I assured them I had accepted The Lord as my Savior.

-Getting into the back of the cop car that was patrolling St. Pete Beach, Florida. Apparently, I was waiting for a bus that had stopped running. The cop gave me a lift home, not before radioing in that he had a "Caucasian female" in his car. Two days later he tried to get my phone number from the building security guard.

-Considering enlisting in the Navy, because it was within walking distance of my San Diego apartment. I actually called them, and was told with my degree, I could be an officer. I realized how ridiculous this idea was and hung up.

-Considering becoming a stock broker, because Morgan Stanley was within walking distance of my San Diego apartment. I actually took the Morgan Stanley entrance test, but half-way through realized how ridiculous the idea was and proceeded to leave. Some Morgan Stanley bigwig stopped me and called me into his office to give me a pep talk. I still didn't pursue a career as a stock broker.

-Crouching in the back of a New Orleans cab, awaiting gun play, as my cabbie pulled out his gun and called another driver the N word.

-Receiving a pink muumuu and matching shoes plus a decorative brass plate from a Moroccan cab driver who used to drive me home from CNN at 4am every morning.

-Sleeping on Ted Turner's sofa until I could take MARTA at 6am and getting hustled out by two security guards.

-Getting stranded in downtown Cochran, Georgia and having to hang out in Badcock furniture store for an hour, sitting on a Lay-Z-Boy and chatting with the employees. I helped sell a dinette set.

-Actually walking in Atlanta, Georgia, which caused drivers to stop and ask if I was in trouble.

-Actually walking in L.A., where no one asked if I was in trouble but just looked at me like I was insane.

SANTA, MAKE IT A PROMISCUOUS KOALA FOR ME!

So-
I have found the perfect gift for that special someone on your list...
For a paltry 40 bucks a year, you can adopt a koala:
ADOPT A WILD KOALA
Cool right?
But I don't recommend adopting just any koala.
There is no finer way of showing someone you care than presenting them with a certificate that states they've adopted Bago Babe, a koala with chlamydia! And look at her--isn't the little tramp cute?
You've also got to make sure to include her description with your gift. You could even type it up in some fancy font, or perhaps write it in calligraphy on an elegant piece of stationary:

Bago...had a very strange offensive smell exuding from her chest, neck, and upper arms that had us a little mystified as to what it could be. She also had signs of staining around her rear quarters, indicative of Chlamydia, and she was also tending to dribble quite a bit.

Bago Babe is my STD ridden holiday dream come true. I love you Bago!

PEON CONFIDENTIAL PARTY ETIQUETTE

So-
I've been reading a lot of these "What Not To Do At An Office Holiday Party" lists like this:
OFFICE PARTY PERILS
And I have just one thing to say:
For the love of all that is good, juicy and delicious about this festive time of year: Throw that dull bullshit out the window.
Honestly, what the fuck is wrong with these list-writing, fun-crushing assholes?
The whole point of an office holiday party is to create gossip for the next day. And what are people supposed to talk about around the water cooler if no one is generous enough to provide good material?
Picture it:
Imagine if no one xeroxed their ass? If no one propositioned the boss with a can of whipped cream and a sly smile? If no one did the cabbage patch? If no one lit their socks on fire? If no one barfed in a ficus plant? If no one burped out "Jingle Bells"? If no one did anything they regretted the next day?

What would be the point?

So I'm begging you:
When you attend your office holiday party--drink too much, tell dirty jokes, wear your underpants on your head or find some other unique way to embarrass yourself.
And then e-mail me with all the details.

KING DING DONG

I just wanted to say that I really miss King Ding Dong. Look at him. He's a benevolent leader. Jolly, even.
Hostess, are you listening?
It's time to restore King Ding Dong to his rightful throne. His majesty has been in cream-filled exile for far too long.
